Luiz Hermano (Preaoca, CE, 1954). Lives and works in São Paulo

Settled in São Paulo, Luiz Hermano presented his first important exhibit, Desenhos (Drawings), in 1979 at MASP. His early artwork, constructed within a fantasy universe, in dialogue with other Brazilian artists, such as Marcello Grassmann, gradually gave way to three-dimensional works, which featured in the 21st São Paulo Biennial, in 1991, when Hermano was privileged with a special room.

The popular universe is one of his major references, using various different small objects, such as plastic toys and other bits and bobs found in series and pieces such as Redes de cubos (Cube Networks), from 1999, Balão (Balloon), from 1997, and Figura (Figure), from 1998.

These two branches of the artist's work find a point of synthesis in the installation Encantados (Enchanted), assembled in 2004 at the Nara Roesler gallery. A sky built with clouds and balloons shared the space with “basins” of light and small “embalmed” beings on the walls.

Templo do corpo (Temple of the Body), Hermano's solo exhibit at the State Pinacoteca, in 2008, where the artist created hybrid pieces, built from materials disposed of by the consumer society, such as wires and plastic pieces, was inspired by ancient civilizations, which the artist learned about on his travels.

Hermano has works in several esteemed collections in Brazil, including those of the Pinacoteca, MAC-USP, MAM-SP, MAM-RJ and MASP, as well as in foreign collections, like that of Patricia Cisneros, in Caracas, Venezuela.
